Established in 1926 as one of Italy's first architecture schools, Iuav University of Venice (Università Iuav di Venezia, or IUAV) is now a university dedicated to design in many forms, focusing on not only architecture and urban planning but fashion, graphics, product design, multimedia arts and theatre. Programmes include undergraduate and postgraduate degrees plus advanced specialisation courses and research doctorates. Workshops are at the heart of IUAV's teaching method, with students learning under the tutelage of high-calibre professionals, while many programmes include the opportunity to undertake an internship in a professional environment in Italy or abroad. Around 5,000 students study at IUAV, with admissions limited to maintain the quality of teaching.
