Eilean ou comment l’artisanat d’art trouve sa place dans la restauration de voiliers

Pendant près de trois années, des maîtres artisans italiens se sont relayés pour restaurer minutieusement ce voilier, construit dans un chantier écossais en 1936, en employant autant que possible les techniques et matériaux de l’époque

• La cabine a été refaite selon les plans des années 1930 et aménagée avec ses équipements d’origine, notamment son gouvernail en bois
• Les deux mâts ont été reconstruits. Six mètres cubes de bois d'épicéa ont été extraits d’un seul et même arbre en Alaska
• 60 % des planches du bordé d’origine en teck de Birmanie de 4 cm d’épaisseur ont été récupérées
• 5 000 caches ont été taillés dans le bois du pont d’origine pour recouvrir les vis
• Les nouveaux instruments de navigation – notamment une horloge murale, un baromètre et un chronomètre de marine – ont été fabriqués exclusivement pour Eilean par Panerai, maison de haute horlogerie italienne et commanditaire du projet de restauration

Les visiteurs de l’exposition Homo Faber Event 2022 à Venise auront la possibilité de monter à bord du yacht Eilean, magnifiquement restauré par Panerai, maison d’horlogerie haut de gamme et ancien fournisseur d’instruments et de montres de plongée professionnels de la Marine italienne.

Eilean, ketch bermudien de 22 mètres, dessiné et fabriqué en 1936 dans un légendaire chantier naval écossais, était en piteux état lorsqu’il a été trouvé à Antigua en 2006 et racheté par Panerai. Ramené en Italie par cargo, Eilean a été confié à une équipe de maîtres artisans du chantier Francesco Del Carlo à Viareggio. Au cours des trois années qui ont suivi, ceux-ci ont redonné vie au voilier, tout en conservant ses formes et ses caractéristiques essentielles, ainsi qu’une grande part de ses matériaux d’origine.

Avec son élégance et ses lignes impeccables, Eilean donne plus qu’un extraordinaire exemple de savoir-faire artisanal et d’authenticité. Le voilier incarne également les valeurs humaines et maritimes qui sont profondément ancrées dans l'identité de Panerai.

Prise en charge par Panerai, sa restauration atteste de la grande estime que le secteur du luxe affiche envers les compétences artisanales traditionnelles et son attachement à se positionner en ambassadeur de l’artisanat d’art qu’il entend défendre pour l’avenir.

Le voilier sera amarré tout près de l’exposition, dans les eaux de l’île San Giorgio Maggiore. Les visiteurs pourront grimper à bord et observer de plus près les compétences et le talent artistique qui ont présidé à sa renaissance. Magnifique symbole alliant construction navale traditionnelle et artisanat d’art, Eilean coïncide parfaitement avec ce que représente Venise, une cité historique construite sur la mer, qui baigne dans la créativité.

Panerai

Panerai’s watches are a natural blend of Italian design, expert Swiss technology and passion for the sea. Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and school of watchmaking, for many decades Panerai supplied the Italian navy in general, and its specialist diving corps in particular, with precision instruments. Eilean

Eilean was built in 1936 by the legendary Scottish boatyard, Fife of Fairlie, according to a design by William Fife III. In her long history, this beautiful boat has known a succession of different owners who have taken her across the Atlantic no less than 36 times. During the 1970s and 80s she was a charter yacht in the Caribbean, moored at English Bay, Antigua, and such was her popularity that she was chosen by the band Duran Duran to feature in the video to their hit song Rio in 1982. Eilean’s glory days came to an end after she was damaged by a stricken ferry near Malaga, Spain. Her then owner took her back to Antigua to begin repair work, but progress was slow and in the following years she suffered further damage. She was found and bought in 2006 by Angelo Bonati, CEO of Panerai, and her restoration was completed in 2009.
