Dans le cadre de l’exposition Mechanical Marvels, des étudiants en design de l’ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne collaborent avec des maîtres artisans de la ville de Sainte-Croix en Suisse pour créer d’incroyables installations mécaniques

En avril prochain, à l’occasion de l’édition 2022 d’Homo Faber Event, les visiteurs seront plongés dans un univers dédié à la mécanique d’art dans le cadre de l’exposition Mechanical Marvels, qui présente les fruits d’une collaboration dynamique entre l’Association Mec-Art (Pour la Mécanique d’Art) et l’ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne.
Depuis plusieurs années, le Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship de l’ECAL permet à ses étudiants de travailler en étroite collaboration avec des maisons prestigieuses et ainsi enrichir leur formation dans des secteurs d’excellence aussi variés que la haute horlogerie, les arts de la table, la mode, la gastronomie et les Métiers d’Art ou encore pour aborder l’utilisation de matériaux nobles à travers des techniques et des métiers spécifiques.
Le partenariat récent avec l’Association Mec-Art crée ainsi l’opportunité pour les étudiants du programme de collaborer avec des hommes et des femmes, tous artisans, basés dans la ville de Sainte-Croix. Cette cité de l’arc jurassien franco-suisse regroupe tous les savoir-faire utiles à la mécanique d’art. Ici, les artisans perpétuent leur savoir-faire séculaire dans les métiers de la mécanique d’art, tels que les boîtes à musique et les automates – des traditions qui sont désormais inscrites sur la liste du Patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’UNESCO.
Le projet ambitieux issu de cette collaboration, imaginé par des étudiants de l’ECAL puis réalisé par des artisans de Mec-Art, illustre les savoir-faire qui, après avoir été transmis de génération en génération, trouvent aujourd’hui encore à s’exprimer au cœur des ateliers et des manufactures qui jalonnent Sainte-Croix.
Cinq installations mécaniques créées pour ce projet constituent l’exposition Mechanical Marvels lors d’Homo Faber Event. Sous l’égide de Nicolas Le Moigne, curateur de l’exposition et directeur du programme à l’ECAL, et de Simon Kidston, expert britannique, les visiteurs sont invités à plonger dans un espace transformé par des jeux de lumière, de matières et de transparences, dans une scénographie imaginée par la designer suisse Charlotte Therre. Entièrement interactive, cette exposition laisse la possibilité aux visiteurs d’actionner eux-mêmes ces merveilles de mécanismes en remontant une manivelle, et ainsi de donner vie aux différents automates. Ils seront agréablement surpris par le caractère humain et chaleureux de ces œuvres d’art cinétiques, et par l’univers poétique et fantastique auquel elles donnent naissance.

Mechanical Marvels sera présentée dans la Salle de la photographie de la Fondazione Giorgio Cini. Elle fait partie des 15 expositions qui composent Homo Faber Event 2022, organisé par la Michelangelo Foundation.

Association Mec-Art
The purpose of Association Mec-Art (Pour la Mécanique d’Art), from Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, is to preserve and promote ancestral traditions, enabling technological and artistic advances and building a bridge between art and mechanical technology. The initiative was born in 2017 with the involvement of CPNV, PERFORM, the town of Sainte-Croix and artisans themselves. Today it has become a centre dedicated to this savoir-faire, with a mission to unite, share and address authentic values. In reaction to this era of globalisation, connectivity, dematerialisation and virtual reality, an increasing number of people are eager to discover local traditions. The artisans of Sainte-Croix region are committed to maintaining and passing on their local artisanal heritage. In 2020 UNESCO placed horological and mechanical art on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. ”Mécanique d’Art” is when mechanics add both motion and emotion to art, thus becoming a mechanical work of art. Nicolas Le Moigne
Nicolas Le Moigne is a designer and professor at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. For more than ten years, he has headed the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. This unique course allows the students to work in close collaboration with prestigious maisons, which can draw on a heritage of a hundred years or more, in order to further their design education in areas of excellence as varied as fine watchmaking, tableware, fashion, gastronomy and the métiers d’art, and to learn particular techniques with regards to the use of noble materials and craftsmanship.
Simon Kidston
With high-profile clients around the world, Simon Kidston is a well-known expert on classic cars. He began his career in the late-1980s at a London auction house, before co-founding Brooks (now Bonhams) Europe in Geneva, spending the next decade staging international auctions dedicated to rare and valuable cars. In 2006, he set up an independent consultancy to advise collectors that is now synonymous with Private Treaty sales of rare and exceptional motor cars. He has been involved in several heritage events for historic cars including the Cartier Travel With Style concours in India, the Mille Miglia, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy. He contributes to Ramp and Vanity Fair magazines and has just published the definitive book on the Lamborghini Miura.
