日本の舞台芸術とヨーロッパの伝統美の融合。Homo Faber Event 2022

1993年の舞台『蝶々夫人』の上演で大きな話題を呼んだアメリカの舞台監督、映像作家のロバート・ウィルソンが、照明、音響、衣装などその技のすべてをお見せします。

〈見どころ〉

· 舞台『蝶々夫人』で使われた漆塗りの椅子「WAITING」をはじめ、日本の職人たちが手がけた数々のアートワークを展示。

· 1960年代につくられたガンディーニ・プールと庭を、『蝶々夫人』の舞台を彷彿とさせるようなセッティングに変えていきます。

· フリーダ・パルメジャーニのオリジナル衣装、400年の伝統を受け継ぐ花柳流舞踏家の花柳寿々紫（すずし）の映像なども紹介します。

「WAITING with peace and darkness」では、アメリカを代表する監督、映像作家のロバート・ウィルソンが1993年にパリのオペラ座で上演したプッチーニの『蝶々夫人』において、日本の伝統文化からいかに影響を受け、舞台を製作していったかを明らかにしていきます。会場では1960年代につくられたプールを舞台に、ドラマティックなシーンを再現。照明、音響ほか、さまざまな視覚効果を用いたウィルソンの舞台芸術を実際の空間で再現します。

会場に足を踏み入れると、来場者は平穏と畏怖が共存する芸術空間の勢いに一気に引き込まれることでしょう。伝統的な漆の技法を用いた椅子「WAITING」は、劇中に蝶々夫人が座る印象的なシーンで使われていますが、これのかにも日本の職人たちが手がけたさまざまな舞台装置を鑑賞することができます。

また、日本を意識しながらウィルソンがハンドペインティングを施し、フリーダ・パルマジャーニがデザインした衣装も展示。さらに1993年のオペラ座をはじめ、15公演をウィルソンとともにした振付師、花柳寿々紫の映像も紹介します。花柳寿々紫は、日本舞踊の最大流派である花柳流の家に生まれ、能や歌舞伎、人形浄瑠璃などを学んだ人物です。

ウィルソンが初期作品においても、日本の舞台芸術の影響を受けていた様子も伝えます。1970年代後半に初来日し、1ヶ月間その地に滞在したことは、彼の後の人生に多大な影響を与えました。「能の大家である観世榮生、若かりし時の歌舞伎役者の5代目坂東玉三郎、そして映画監督で華道家のコハラトシと出会い、これまで見たことのない世界を体験したことで、それまでやってきたことを一気に見直したのです」と、ウィルソンも証言しています。

新しい扉を開けるきっかけとなった日本の旅を経て、万物の属性は対立と共存を繰り返す２つの気からなるという陰陽思想をはじめ、東洋思想に傾倒していったロバート・ウィルソン。ホモ・ファベールでの展示の根底には、同様のヴィジョンがあると言います。

Robert Wilson

Texas-born Robert Wilson is one of the world’s foremost theatre directors and visual artists. His works for the stage unconventionally incorporate a wide variety of artistic media including dance, movement, lighting, sculpture, music and text. His productions have been acclaimed by audiences and critics worldwide, and he has won numerous awards including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale, two Premio Ubu Awards and an Olivier Award, as well as a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. His drawings, paintings and sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are held in private and public collections around the world.
