La Michelangelo Foundation et la Heritage Crafts Association s’allient pour donner à la Red List of Endangered Crafts (Liste rouge des savoir-faire menacés) une dimension européenne

Cette initiative permet au projet de Liste rouge des savoir-faire menacés lancé au Royaume-Uni en 2017 de prendre une envergure européenne. La mutualisation des ressources et des méthodes de recherche doit permettre d'identifier, d’accroître la visibilité et de protéger des métiers artisanaux menacés de disparition, en s’appuyant sur la mobilisation en local des membres du réseau de la Michelangelo Foundation.

Trois films exceptionnels, produits par la Michelangelo Foundation, mettent en lumière trois talents rares originaires du Royaume-Uni

La Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship a l’immense plaisir d’annoncer la signature d’un partenariat avec la Heritage Crafts Association afin que la Red List of Endangered Crafts du Royaume-Uni accède à un niveau européen.

Ce nouveau partenariat s'ouvre par une présentation organisée à la Somerset House à Londres, le 28 février 2020. Le lancement de cette Liste rouge coïncide avec Collect, le salon international consacré à l’artisanat contemporain et au design qui se tient à la Somerset House du 27 février au 1er mars 2020.

A cette occasion Alberto Cavalli, Co-directeur exécutif de la Michelangelo Foundation, et Patricia Lovett MBE, Présidente de la Heritage Crafts Association, dévoilent les modalités de ce partenariat. Par ailleurs, une table ronde animée par Oliver Stratford, rédacteur en chef de Disegno, permet d'explorer, sous des angles différents, les métiers artisanaux menacés ainsi que leur place dans l’artisanat contemporain. Parmi les experts présents figurent Daniel Carpenter, coordinateur de recherche à la Heritage Crafts Association, Rosy Greenlees, Directrice générale du Crafts Council, Kate Hetherington, fabricant de rênes et de harnais d’attelage, et Mark Webb, responsable du développement et de la levée de fonds pour The Prince’s Foundation.

La Michelangelo Foundation se propose d’apporter son soutien au projet de Liste rouge qui correspond parfaitement à ses missions visant à promouvoir, préserver et perpétuer l’artisanat. Cette Liste rouge s’inscrit également dans l’essence même de la fondation : l’exposition Homo Faber qui, tous les deux ans, met en lumière les maîtres artisans européens contemporains et leur travail d'excellence.

Le partenariat entre les deux organisations entend bâtir un socle commun afin de sensibiliser aux menaces qui pèsent sur le patrimoine artisanal ancestral et chercher de nouvelles voies innovantes pour que ces métiers perdurent, en garantissant la continuité des pratiques et leur adaptation aux exigences actuelles.

Pour célébrer ce partenariat, la Michelangelo Foundation a demandé au réalisateur suisse Thibault Vallotton de réaliser trois films dont elle est également productrice. Ces trois courts-métrages mettent ainsi en valeur trois talents rares qui exercent, outre-Manche, des métiers artisanaux en voie de disparition. Ils sont l’occasion d’une plongée dans l’intimité de ces trésors de l’artisanat britannique qui s’efforcent de faire perdurer des savoir-faire essentiels.

L’un des films fait partie d’une nouvelle série qui présente 12 artisans d’exception venus de toute l’Europe. Ils seront visibles lors de l’exposition Singular Talents – The Red List à l’occasion de la deuxième édition d’Homo Faber: Crafting a more human future. Réalisés sur commande, ces films dévoilent les coulisses du travail de ces artisans précieux qui exercent un métier rare, voire unique.

La HCA Red List of Endangered Crafts propose une méthodologie de recherche essentielle, qui permet d'identifier et classer les métiers en voie de disparition au Royaume-Uni. Elle évalue la viabilité de ces différents artisanats et les classe par catégories de risque. Adoptant la méthodologie de recherche préconisée par la Heritage Crafts Association, qui est fondée sur une consultation des artisans concernés, la Michelangelo Foundation fait appel à son vaste réseau de membres à travers l’Europe pour que la Liste rouge des métiers menacés accède à une dimension européenne. En s’appuyant sur le savoir-faire de son réseau, la fondation espère que cette initiative aura un retentissement d’envergure, en réussissant à identifier et classer des métiers artisanaux en danger de disparition à travers l’Europe. Ce repérage facilite ainsi la cartographie des métiers d’art européens menacés.

Heritage Crafts Association is an independent charity advocating on behalf of traditional heritage crafts, founded in 2009 by a small group of makers and those interested in craft. Working in partnership with government and key agencies, it provides a focus for craftspeople, groups, societies and guilds, as well as individuals who care about the loss of traditional crafts skills, and works towards a healthy and sustainable framework for the future. It aims to support and promote heritage crafts as a fundamental part of our living heritage.

The HCA Red List of Endangered Crafts created by the Heritage Crafts Association, was the first to rank traditional crafts in the UK by the likelihood they would survive the next generation. The 2019 edition of the Red List assessed 212 crafts to identify those that are at greatest risk of disappearing, of which four have been classified as extinct, 36 as critically endangered, 70 as endangered and 102 as currently viable. The Red List shows that the craft knowledge, skills and practices that form an important part of our shared cultural heritage are – for a number of reasons – at risk of being lost. The HCA believes that these cultural assets are as important as unique heritage buildings and ancient beautiful landscapes and could provide future generations with fantastic opportunities to enrich their lives and the lives of others.

Thibault Vallotton is a Swiss film producer born in 1987, he studied cinema at L’ECAL, Lausanne, where he came into contact with inspiring figures and learnt the basics of film production. He discovered the world of the applied arts through his work with Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship. His series of 12 artisan portraits commissioned for Homo Faber 2018 is shortlisted by The International Film Festival for Fine Craft (FIFMA). Thibault approaches artisan profiles with a documentary style, inspired by the work of Errol Morris, Frederick Wiseman and Chantal Akerman.

Kate Hetherington is a harness and collar maker from Dulverton, Somerset. Kate handcrafts premium quality English leather collars and harnesses, specialising in made to measure carriage-driving harnesses. Kate has been practising her craft for over 17 years, using traditional methods and designs passed onto her during an apprenticeship with master collar and harness maker John McDonald. In 2013, Kate won the Worshipful Company of Coach and Coach Harness Makers Award. Kate is a certified saddler and holds her BDS carriage driving tests.

David A Smith MBE from Torquay in Devon, is world-renowned for his high quality reverse glass lettering and artistry – which encompasses all the skills historically done by an array of craftspeople, including design, lettering, acid etching, brilliant cutting, silvering and angel gilding – having revived many of these skills from the point of extinction in the UK. He has had many high-profile commissions in the UK and abroad, including John Meyer, Sony Music, the Victoria & Albert Museum and Disney.

Derek and Timothy Staines are the engineers behind the design and manufacture of some of the world’s most beautiful modern handmade orreries. The father and son team design and handcraft these scientific instruments in their workshop as commissioned pieces. Originally, toolmakers from London, they have recently relocated to Mundford, Norfolk. Inscribed onto the work their mark remains. Staines & Son, Fecit, London.
