La Michelangelo Foundation e la Heritage Crafts Association uniscono le forze per promuovere la Red List of Endangered Crafts a livello europeo

L’iniziativa è volta a estendere a tutta l’Europa il progetto della Red List, originariamente istituita nel 2017, attraverso azioni congiunte e percorsi di ricerca condivisi, al fine di identificare, valorizzare e proteggere i mestieri a rischio di scomparsa anche grazie al coinvolgimento dei membri del network della fondazione nei diversi Paesi.

La nuova partnership sarà suggellata il 28 febbraio in occasione dell’evento di lancio previsto nell’ambito dell’iniziativa Collect, il salone internazionale d’arte dedicato all’artigianato e al design contemporanei organizzato dal Crafts Council presso la Somerset House di Londra
Tre film inediti, prodotti dalla Michelangelo Foundation, metteranno in luce altrettanti Talenti Rari del Regno Unito

La Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship è lieta di annunciare una nuova partnership con la Heritage Crafts Association: l’obiettivo è di estendere la Red List of Endangered Crafts dal Regno Unito all’Europa intera.

La nuova partnership prende il via presso la Somerset House di Londra il 28 febbraio 2020. Il lancio della Red List coinciderà con Collect, il salone internazionale d’arte dedicato all’artigianato e al design contemporanei, che sarà inaugurato presso la Somerset House e sarà aperto al pubblico dal 27 febbraio all’1 marzo 2020.

Alberto Cavalli (Co-direttore esecutivo della Michelangelo Foundation) e Patricia Lovett MBE (Presidente della Heritage Crafts Association) presenteranno i dettagli della partnership, mentre una tavola rotonda moderata da Oliver Stratford (Direttore di Disegno) esplorerà le prospettive dei mestieri a rischio di scomparsa e il loro ruolo nel contesto dell’artigianato contemporaneo. Faranno parte del panel Daniel Carpenter (Coordinatore della Ricerca presso la Heritage Crafts Association), Rosy Greenlees (Direttore Esecutivo del Crafts Council), Kate Hetherington (creatrice di bardature per cavalli) e Mark Webb (Fundraising e Development Manager presso The Prince’s Foundation).

L’impegno della Michelangelo Foundation nel dare il proprio supporto al progetto della Red List è in linea con la missione della fondazione di promuovere, preservare e tramandarei mestieri d’arte, oltre a essere coerente con Homo Faber, la mostra-evento biennale dedicata al lavoro dei migliori maestri artigiani contemporanei europei, progetto di punta della fondazione.

La partnership tra le due organizzazioni si pone l’obiettivo di stimolare la crescita di una coscienza collettiva rispetto ai rischi che minacciano i mestieri di lunga tradizione, e di trovare strade nuove e innovative per far sì che i mestieri a rischio di scomparsa possano sopravvivere in futuro, assicurando così continuità alle pratiche e permettendo all’artigianato di adattarsi alla domanda del mercato contemporaneo.

Per celebrare la partnership, la Michelangelo Foundation ha affidato al regista svizzero Thibault Vallotton la realizzazione di tre cortometraggi dedicati ad altrettanti Talenti Rari del Regno Unito che si dedicano a mestieri classificati come a rischio di scomparsa. I filmati entrano nei mondi di questi tre preziosi talenti artigianali britannici, che ogni giorno lottano per preservare il loro savoir-faire.

Uno dei video farà parte di una nuova serie che avrà come protagonisti dodici maestri a rischio di scomparsa provenienti da tutta Europa. I video saranno presentati al pubblico nella mostra Talenti Rari – La Red List che si terrà presso la seconda edizione di Homo Faber: Crafting a more human future.

La Red List of Endangered Crafts della Heritage Crafts Association fornisce una metodologia di ricerca essenziale per identificare e classificare i mestieri a rischio nel Regno Unito. Determina la sostenibilità di questi mestieri e categorizza quelli che sono maggiormente minacciati di scomparsa. La Michelangelo Foundation abbraccia la metodologia di ricerca della Heritage Crafts Association per coinvolgere la sua estesa rete di membri europei, in modo da allargare la Red List of Endangered Crafts a livello europeo. Traendo spunto dalle competenze delle organizzazioni che operano in specifiche comunità locali, la fondazione auspica che l’iniziativa possa avere un impatto ad ampio raggio, identificando e classificando con successo i mestieri a rischio in tutta Europa. Un approccio che faciliterà la mappatura dei mestieri europei considerati a rischio di scomparsa.

Heritage Crafts Association is an independent charity advocating on behalf of traditional heritage crafts, founded in 2009 by a small group of makers and those interested in craft. Working in partnership with government and key agencies, it provides a focus for craftspeople, groups, societies and guilds, as well as individuals who care about the loss of traditional crafts skills, and works towards a healthy and sustainable framework for the future. It aims to support and promote heritage crafts as a fundamental part of our living heritage.

The HCA Red List of Endangered Crafts created by the Heritage Crafts Association, was the first to rank traditional crafts in the UK by the likelihood they would survive the next generation. The 2019 edition of the Red List assessed 212 crafts to identify those that are at greatest risk of disappearing, of which four have been classified as extinct, 36 as critically endangered, 70 as endangered and 102 as currently viable. The Red List shows that the craft knowledge, skills and practices that form an important part of our shared cultural heritage are – for a number of reasons – at risk of being lost. The HCA believes that these cultural assets are as important as unique heritage buildings and ancient beautiful landscapes and could provide future generations with fantastic opportunities to enrich their lives and the lives of others.

Thibault Vallotton is a Swiss film producer born in 1987, he studied cinema at L’ECAL, Lausanne, where he came into contact with inspiring figures and learnt the basics of film production. He discovered the world of the applied arts through his work with Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship. His series of 12 artisan portraits commissioned for Homo Faber 2018 is shortlisted by The International Film Festival for Fine Craft (FIFMA). Thibault approaches artisan profiles with a documentary style, inspired by the work of Errol Morris, Frederick Wiseman and Chantal Akerman.

Kate Hetherington is a harness and collar maker from Dulverton, Somerset. Kate handcrafts premium quality English leather collars and harnesses, specialising in made to measure carriage-driving harnesses. Kate has been practising her craft for over 17 years, using traditional methods and designs passed onto her during an apprenticeship with master collar and harness maker John McDonald. In 2013, Kate won the Worshipful Company of Coach and Coach Harness Makers Award. Kate is a certified saddler and holds her BDS carriage driving tests.

David A Smith MBE from Torquay in Devon, is world-renowned for his high quality reverse glass lettering and artistry – which encompasses all the skills historically done by an array of craftspeople, including design, lettering, acid etching, brilliant cutting, silvering and angel gilding – having revived many of these skills from the point of extinction in the UK. He has had many high-profile commissions in the UK and abroad, including John Meyer, Sony Music, the Victoria & Albert Museum and Disney.

Derek and Timothy Staines are the engineers behind the design and manufacture of some of the world’s most beautiful modern handmade orreries. The father and son team design and handcraft these scientific instruments in their workshop as commissioned pieces. Originally, toolmakers from London, they have recently relocated to Mundford, Norfolk. Inscribed onto the work their mark remains. Staines & Son, Fecit, London.
