Pattern of Crafts は、ドイツのデザイナー、セバスチャン・ヘルクナーがインテリアにおける職人技の重要性に焦点を当てます。

〈みどろこ〉

• サン・ジョルジョ・マッジョーレ島の教会前広場に敷かれたタイルの幾何学模様を、日本とヨーロッパの名工たちの技で再現します。

• 大理石、寄木細工、テキスタイルなど、さまざまな工芸分野における一連の卓越した技を、各工程や製作風景とともに紹介します。

• 進化するデジタル社会のなかで、人間が持つ感覚がいかに重要で、インテリアの豊かさに寄与しているかを解説します。

2019 年のメゾン・エ・オブジェで「Designer of the year」に選ばれたセバスチャン・ヘルクナーが、ホモ・ファベール 2022 の「Pattern of Crafts」にて、インテリアデザインと室内装飾の分野における職人技の重要性を探ります。ヘルクナーは、ヨーロッパ各国から名工を選出。サン・ジョルジョ・マッジョーレ聖堂前広場のタイルに描かれたレース編みのような八角形のパターンをモチーフにした作品を彼らに依頼しました。

大理石、ガラス、モザイク、寄木細工、金工、染織など、各専門分野の技術や素材知識を生かしながら職人たちがそれぞれにパターンを読み解き、独創的なパネルを創作していきます。この取り組みは、伝統に培われた技で現代空間に生きる形を作り出すことで、いかに職人たちのノウハウがデザイナーのイメージを実現するかを証明するものです。会場内では各作品の製作風景やその工程なども垣間見ることができます。

ドイツ・バイエルン州で父の営む工房や森で幼少期を過ごしたセバスチャン・ヘルクナーは、ものづくりには、それぞれの土地や文化、そして人間の本質が凝縮されていると考えています。

「私たち人間が豊かな感覚に満ち溢れているという事実こそが人を特別な存在し、この感覚はデザインや職人技にも直結しています。工房に足を踏み入れれば、木の香りを嗅ぎ、ガラスの熱を感じるもの。外見や現実とともに、肌で感じることはとても大切であり、私はこうした感覚を持つ人々のためにデザインをしているのです」 ──セバスチャン・ヘルクナ

Crafting a more human future

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice

Organised by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, the Homo Faber Event is an international exhibition that champions artisanal talent, showcasing an impressive variety of materials, techniques and skills through live demonstrations, immersive digital experiences and imaginative displays of handcrafted creations. From functional everyday objects to outstanding decorative pieces, this edition highlights craft’s role in creating a more sustainable and inclusive future. The event offers a rare chance to admire the prestigious work of a selection of Japan’s National Living Treasures and to experience craft and its connections to the arts and to the design world. Visitors can join guided tours of the 15 exhibition spaces led by passionate students participating in the Young Ambassadors Programme. Imagined by a team of world-renowned curators and designers, the scenographic event transforms the magnificent spaces of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, located on San Giorgio Maggiore Island in the heart of the Venetian lagoon. Sebastian Herkner

German designer Sebastian Herkner has made an indelible mark on the world of interior design since launching his own studio in 2006. Combining his unconditional love for traditional craftsmanship with a flair for colour, a curiosity for different cultures and a feel for new technologies, Herkner has designed furniture for some of the world’s most respected manufacturers, including ClassiCon, Rosenthal, Ames and Cappellini, as well as architectural projects and museum and exhibition designs. His work has garnered numerous awards, and he was named Designer of the Year 2019 by Maison&Objet
