Une exposition de photographies à voir en exclusivité à l’occasion d’Homo Faber révèle la beauté des artisans de Vénétie en plein ouvrage

Après avoir visité 21 ateliers d’artisans de Venise et de la Vénétie environnante, la photographe italienne Susanna Pozzoli nous fait découvrir la passion, le savoir-faire, la dextérité et les innombrables heures de travail qui se cachent derrière chaque pièce façonnée à la main :

• En été, les maîtres artisans verriers commencent leur journée à 4 h du matin afin de pouvoir supporter la chaleur qui règne dans leur atelier, impossible à climatiser car le verre doit refroidir lentement, à température ambiante.
• Les fabricants de gondoles conçoivent des embarcations sur mesure, en fonction de leur propriétaire, qu’ils adaptent à la taille et au poids du gondolier.
• Seuls quelques rares maîtres artisans fabriquent encore de la feuille d’or à la main. Ce procédé laborieux suppose de marteler le métal pur jusqu’à atteindre guère plus de 0,02 microns, soit une épaisseur des milliers de fois plus fines que celle du papier.

Susanna Pozzoli, photographe, artiste et artisan elle-même, a eu le privilège de pousser la porte de 21 ateliers de Venise et de sa région pour l’exposition Venetian Way organisée dans le cadre d’Homo Faber.
Artisans seuls devant leur établi, ateliers intimes ou fabriques plus importantes... tous ont accepté d’ouvrir leurs portes à la photographe afin qu’elle capte, avec son objectif, ces instants précieux du procédé de fabrication du verre, du brocart, de costumes, de dentelle, de gondoles, de masques, de sculptures en métal et joaillerie, de chaussures, de céramique, de capes, de livres faits main, de meubles, de sculptures en bois, ou de vêtements en laine et soie (c.f. liste complète ci-dessous). Cette sélection d’ateliers démontre la grande diversité de savoir-faire, de techniques et de talents, mais ne constitue pourtant qu’un échantillon de l’immense richesse artisanale de la Vénétie.

Pour Susanna Pozzoli, il était important d’utiliser la photographie analogique, plutôt que numérique. En effet, le recours à la pellicule suppose la même démarche menée avec minutie, précision et rigueur que celle employée par les artisans qu’elle a photographiés. Avec empathie et respect pour le processus créatif, Susanna Pozzoli a capté ces maîtres d’exception à l’œuvre, en s’attachant à leur gestuelle et à leurs procédés. Elle en a tiré un véritable poème mis en images et invite le visiteur à imaginer l’instant juste avant et l’instant juste après le moment capté sur l’image. « Chaque photo marque une pause entre deux gestes. Elle oblige celui qui la regarde à mobiliser son attention, prendre le temps et donner libre cours à son imagination », déclare Susanna Pozzoli.

Cette ode photographique à l’artisanat d’art dépeint la passion, le dévouement et la persévérance qui vont de pair avec la création d’objets d’un raffinement exquis dans les ateliers de la région de Vénétie.
« L’exposition n’est pas un documentaire », précise Denis Curti, Directeur artistique de Tre Oci et co- commissaire de l’exposition. « C’est un point de vue particulier, un angle de vue très singulier ».

Venetian Way est l’un des 16 espaces d’exposition qui composent Homo Faber, une nouvelle exposition d’envergure organisée par la Michelangelo Foundation en hommage à l’artisanat européen.

Susanna Pozzoli

Born in the north of Italy, Susanna Pozzoli graduated in Foreign Languages and Literatures from Bergamo University and holds a Master’s Degree (DEA) in Multimedia from the Sorbonne. She studied photography in Paris and began to show and publish her work beginning in 2000. Selected for many artist-in-residency and international programmes, her photography and multimedia work has been presented in numerous solo shows in Italy and abroad, including an acclaimed project documenting master artisans in Korea. susannapozzoli.com
