Homo Faber NextGen - Summer School

The Michelangelo Foundation’s inaugural Summer School Programme welcomed young artisans and designers to study craftsmanship across Europe

Developed in collaboration with Michelangelo Foundation's international network, the first Summer School Programme invited 50 young students and recent graduates in craftsmanship and design to broaden their horizons by exploring new skills beyond their specialised field.

To promote master craftsmanship and pass on traditional skills and knowledge to the next generation, seven short courses were held across Europe, offering practical workshops and intellectual discussions led by master craftsmen.

  • Portuguese Basket Technology, Museu de Arte Popular, Lisbon, Portugal
  • Stone Carving for Beginners, City & Guilds of London Art School, London, UK
  • Introduction to Ornamental Woodcarving, City & Guilds of London Art School, London, UK
  • Gilding and Verre Eglomisé, City & Guilds of London Art School, London, UK
  • Etching Fundamentals, City & Guilds of London Art School, London, UK
  • Tapestry and Artistic Interpretation, Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie, Aubusson, France
  • Glassblowing, Association French Hot Glass Family, Belle-île-en-Mer, France

The participating international students were selected from nearly 200 applications received for the Summer School Programme, one of several initiatives provided by the foundation aimed at new generations.

In giving a young community of craftsmen and designers the chance to participate in educational initiaitves such as the Young Ambassadors Programme and the Summer School Programme, the Michelangelo Foundation proves its commitment to investing in the future of craftsmanship - consolidating and nourishing the Young Community by including it across the full scope of its projects.
