The art of Zellige in Tétouan, Morocco Participate in Michelangelo Foundation’s first Summer School course to take place in Africa. Taking place from 10 to 24 September in Tétouan, Morocco you will discover traditional techniques of Zellige (Moroccan mosaic) while re-exploring them through contemporary design. Working with local artisans and scholars the focus will be on a co-creation approach whereby student and artisan will work together to make a modern piece that will help propel the heritage of Zellige art into the future. The Michelangelo Foundation, along with the Institut National des Beaux-Arts in Tétouan, invite talented students to apply. Applications are now open until 15 June 2022

Craftsmanship meets Digital Fabrication

1 AUG – 13 AUG 2022
Évora, Portugal


Participate in this design-build program, to be held in August at the Évora university, which aims to strengthen the tradition of building and craftsmanship enhanced with the use of digital tools and computer simulations. Reinforce your design skills through the experience of fabrication, working with materials and building itself. Guided by tutors, your task will be to design and build, within a period of two weeks, a retractable shading device that will become a part of University of Évora’s common spaces. The technology will mix between high-tech (digital fabrication techniques, environmental simulation) and lo-TEK (Traditional Ecological Knowledge) represented by craftsmanship with basket-weavers.
This summer school is organized by Passa Ao Futuro and Dosta Tec together with _ARTERIA_LAB and the School of the Arts from University of Évora, co-financed by Magallanes_ICC - Interrreg Portugal - Spain. The Michelangelo Foundation, Passa Ao Futuro and all partners invite motivated talented students and young professionals with over 2 years’ experience in 3 dimensional making and building to apply.

Stone design

Discover more about Austria’s long tradition of stone craft and architecture. Take part in this course from 5 t o16 September in St Pölten where you will explore local stonemasonry techniques so as to apply these in contemporary and unexpected ways. Your design mentor will be guiding you as you visit outstanding examples of stone architecture, work with local stonemasons and combine traditional stonemasonry methods learnt with cutting edge technology. The final pieces co-created by students and artisans will be exhibited in a distinct space in St Pölten. The Michelangelo Foundation, along New Design University, invite talented students to apply.

The Philosophy of the chair

Ligatne, Latvia


Taking place from 18 to 28 August in Ligatne in Gauja National Park you will focus on local blacksmithing, greenwood carving and birch bark weaving using only manual tools in traditional craft techniques. You will be guided by renowned local artisans who will help you create design objects drawing on theoretical knowledge and exploring how incorporating science and technology into crafts practice of contemporary artists and designers can have a positive outcome on furniture design. The practical workshops will be complemented by lectures given by international designers and tutors invited especially for the summer school. The Michelangelo Foundation, along MAD Design School*, invite motivated and talented students to apply. Applications are open up until 15 May 2022.

Introduction to Japanese Carpentry

Domaine de Boisbuchet in Lessac, France


This one-of-a-kind course on Japanese carpentry will take place in the beautiful Domaine de Boisbuchet from Tuesday, June 21st to Saturday, July 2nd, 2022 in Southwest of France.
Guided by Japanese master artisans, you are invited to delve into the world of traditional Japanese joining techniques. We start with an introduction to the traditional woodworking tools followed by the execution of some of the most characteristic joints of this centenary craft. Guided by an expert designer, you will continue the course by applying the acquired knowledge in the execution of objects of different scales, both individually and collectively. Your results will be shown at the end of the course in the magnificent setting of the Domaine.
The Michelangelo Foundation, along with Domaine de Boisbuchet, invite motivated and talented students who want to improve their mastery of woodworking to apply.

Ceramics and gastronomy

13 - 23 JUNE
Castilla-La Mancha, Spain


Take part in this unique course from 13 to 23 June that will explore traditional Talavera ceramic techniques (declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in 2019) in contemporary ways through gastronomy. Students will work with master artisans and chefs from the Toledo region to make ceramic dishes to serve local gastronomy creations. The practical ceramic lessons will be complemented with lectures given by professors of Castilla-La Mancha university on broader topics such as design, commerce, marketing and technology as well as visits to ceramic workshops and gastronomy sites. The Michelangelo Foundation, along with Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha and Contemporanea de Artes y Oficios, invite motivated and talented students to apply.
